Virginia Welcomes 2011 National Indoor Tournament
RICHMOND/VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA – USA Field Hockey’s 2011 National Indoor Tournament returns to Virginia Beach, Virginia this year for the Under-16 and Under-14 Girls Tournament, March 11-13. The Under-19 Girls and Boys Tournament will return to the Greater Richmond Convention Center in Richmond, Virginia after a four year break, March 4-6. This is the first year that different divisions will play on different weekends at different venues. The decision was made after last year’s event to split the age groups to enable a larger number or participants to enter the tournament and create more playing opportunities for USA Field Hockey members.
“This will be the largest National Indoor Tournament we have ever hosted,” said Karen Collins, Director of Event Logistics at USA Field Hockey. “We have an additional one hundred teams attending this year. We appreciate the support we are getting from both the Richmond Sports Backers and the Virginia Beach Sports Commission. We look forward to a great and exciting tournament.”
Additional pools have been added in each division to accommodate the additional athletes that will be playing this year. In total 124 Under-19 teams, 72 Under-16 teams and 56 Under-14 teams will be in attendance. With 252 teams competing, 1,764 field hockey matches will be played over the two weekends.
Matches for the Under-19 division will begin on Friday, March 4 at 2:00pm and will run through Sunday, March 6 at 4:00pm. The same schedule will apply for the following weekend. Matches for the Under-16 and Under-14 divisions will begin on Friday, March 11 at 2:00pm and finish Sunday, March 13 at 4:00pm.
“We’re thrilled to have the USA Field Hockey National Indoor Tournament back in Richmond, Virginia after a four year hiatus,” said Townley Goldsmith-Ray, Sports Backers Director of Event Development. “With the new format having one weekend in Richmond and another in Virginia Beach, there is a great opportunity to grow the event.”
The National Indoor Tournament will feature twenty-nine teams from Virginia, including six from Virginia Beach. The teams include: TYOCO Yang, Beach Premier Ripcurls, TYOCO Chi, TYOCO Zen, TYOCO Prana and Beach United Comets.
