Rainy Weather Starts Disney’s Field Hockey Showcase

ORLANDO, FLORIDA – Despite rainy weather in the morning, Disney’s Field Hockey Showcase held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida, had a successful first day. For the first time in the tournament’s history, two matches were broadcasted live on ESPN3. To watch the matches, click on the links below or visit ESPN3 website at www.espn3.com.

“Despite the rain this morning, day one went off without a hitch,” said Karen Collins, Director of Event Logistics at USA Field Hockey. “We are excited about the ESPN3 broadcast, both were exciting games to watch and we are looking forward to doing more of that in the future. Let’s hope for a little more sunshine in the next couple of days.”

Disney’s Field Hockey Showcase has become known as an event for the high school athlete with dreams of playing at the college level. Athletes bring their best game to display their talents in front of a gallery of college coaches. Many were in attendance today and will be throughout the weekend, evaluating players for a possible spot on a college roster.

Over the next four days, approximately 500 field hockey matches will be played on thirteen different fields. This event has nearly tripled in size since it originated five years ago, and there is already some talk about it growing to be even bigger in the future.

“The atmosphere here today was exciting to see,” said Chrissy Elliot, Senior Sports Manager at ESPN Wide World of Sports. “Many new additions have been made since last year’s Disney’s Showcase. Highlight reels play both on site and in Disney hotel rooms, camera crews are broadcasting games lives, Disney characters are on site for photographs with athletes and motivational signage can be seen throughout the venue. This Showcase is about celebrating our fifth anniversary of the event and acknowledging the twelve club teams that have been with us from the start. We are looking forward to a fun and exciting next couple of days.”
