Selenski's hat trick gives USA 5-1 win over Belgium
Katie Evans (Newtown Square, Pa) put USA on the boards first. Shannon Taylor (Midlothian, VA) gave USA a two goal advanatge going into the second half. But, it was Paige Selenski's (Shavertown, Pa) hat trick that stopped any chance of a comeback and secured a 5-1 win over Belgium today.
"It is good to get a win on the tour," said Lee Bodimeade, Women's National Team Head coach. "Belgium is a quality opponent and we had to play well today to beat them. Selenski's performance helped in the endeavor, but it was in combination with some very good play from the rest of the team."
In the first three matches, Germany won by a narrow margin and escaped USA during the second half of play. Ensuring that was not in the case in the first of four matches against Belgium, USA scored three goals to their opponents one in the first half.
Unaccompanied, Evans went head to head with the Belgium goalkeeper and came away on top. Following Evans goal, Belgium briefly tied the match 1-1 off of a penalty corner, slipping their first and only shot past world renowned keeper Amy Tran Swensen.
An aggressive USA Team began attacking and putting the pressure on Belgium fifteen minutes into the first half. Selenski and Taylor both added one goal apiece from a deflection and a scuffle in front of the cage. Selenski put away two more goals in the second half, leading USA to the 5-1 victory.
"It was a good opening match for the entire team," said Selenski. "We worked the ball well from the backfield up to the strikers."
USA will take on Belgium again tomorrow for the second of four matches in Antwerp, Belgium.
