April 26, 2011, 10:58 p.m. (ET)
COLORADO SPRINGS, C.O. - USA tied Japan, 1-1, in game three of the five game series at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA this afternoon.
"We had a nice, tough contest today and it didn't come as a surprise to us that Japan would be ready to play today," said Lee Bodimeade, Head Coach. "We were pleased with the overall game and the opportunity we had for a number of our younger players to get some international experience against a team like Japan. It was a great learning experience for us."
USA scored first, four minutes into the match, with a field goal by Katie O'Donnell (Blue Bell, Pa). Japan immediately answered back, one minute following USA's goal, knocking a shot past goalkeeper Jackie Kintzer (Robesonia, Pa). USA and Japan went into halftime tied 1-1.
Neither team was able to capitalize on scoring opportunities in the second half. The match ended in a tie, 1-1.
"As a younger player myself, I felt that we all gained a lot of experience and persisted through the challenges that Japan brought to the pitch today," said Pam Spuehler, National Team member. "I think that we can use this game as a stepping stone for the rest of the series and realize that we're able to overcome these challenges and be successful."
The remaining two matches will be played on April 27 and 29. The match on Wednesday, April 27 will be played at 2:30pm PDT. The match on Friday, April 29 will be played at 2:00pm PDT.
