April 25, 2011, 2:22 p.m. (ET)

COLORADO SPRINGS, C.O. – The USA U-17 Women’s National Team competed in the 22nd DOMO International Easter Tournament in Hod Valkenswaard, The Netherlands, April 23-24, 2011. The annual tournament attracts top teams from around the world, including: Belgium, England, France, Germany, Ireland, The Netherlands and the United States.

“Building game to game in a tournament like this challenges you to overcome a lot of the mental obstacles like fatigue and improve your level of play,” said Shellie Onstead, Head Coach. “The team did that very well. Players were asked to play several positions and they responded well. Everybody embraced their role. By the end, when we really needed goals, we got it done. It was a great team effort.”

USA competed in eight matches over Easter weekend and finished with a 6-2, win/loss record. USA scored sixteen goals on their opponents and only allowed six goals to be scored on them. Megan Anstotz (Audubon, NJ), Emma Bozek (Cortlandt Manor, NH), Jordyn Hamilton (East Hampstead, NH), Kelcie Hromisin (Larksville, Pa), Gabrielle Major (Royersford, Pa), and Kelley Stump (Allentown, Pa) contributed two goals each. Debi-Michelle Jantzen 9Shoreham, NY), Kayla Kenney (Warrington, Pa), Alexa MacKintire (Shrewsbury, MA) and Tara Vittese (Cherry Hill, NJ) all had one goal.

Going into the weekend event, USA wanted to focus on forward ball movement and improved defensive organization. In improving in these areas as well as becoming more successful at winning the ball and finding outlets, USA was able to convert scoring opportunities into goals.

USA had the opportunity to watch some of the best club teams in the world. The exposure to such high level of play prior to going into the DOMO Easter Tournament was beneficial for the young team.

Highlights from the tournament include Shannon Johnson (Oceanport, NJ) being named Goalie of the Tournament and Tara Vittese winning the Penalty Shoot-out competition.

This tour was the last event for the 2011 U-17 team. Athletes will compete at the Junior Women’s National Championship, June 18-25 or the National Futures Championship, June 25-30 in Virginia Beach, VA and from there stand for selection to the 2011 Junior National Camp.  The 2012 Jr National teams will be selected at Junior National Camp, July 12-15 at Old Dominion University.
