USA U-19 ties Chile

April 20, 2011, 12:30 a.m. (ET)
SANTIAGO, CHILE - The U19 team played itheir first match of the tour today versus a physical and fast Chilean team. USA, eager to build on the progress made in the Canadian series in March, started fast putting enormous pressure on the Chilean defense. USA spent much of the first half in their attacking 1/3rd and were able to create several corner chances and shooting opportunties but were unable to find the back of the net.

Finally, in the waning moments of the first half, Maxine Fluharty (Millsboro, DE) threaded a pass through two defenders to teammate Katie Gerzabek (Springfield, Pa), who deftly alluded two defenders before sliding the ball past the stingy Chilean goalkeeper.  Head Coach, Carla Tagliente credited the strikers for their smart pressure up front and believed that it was the difference in the first half.

USA came out strong in the second period with fullback, Emily Wold (Freehold, NJ) continuing her dominating play in the back and midfielders Chrissy Davidson (Reading, Pa) and Abby Beltrani (Setauket, NY) providing direction and consistency in the outlet.

USA again sustained quality attack and appeared poised to score another goal until a well-executed counter attack provided the Chilean side with the equalizer.  With ten minutes remaining in the game, USA had several quality chances to take the lead but were unable to convert.

USA will have an opportunity to train tomorrow before taking the field for their second test match against Chile on Thursday.
