Cold Front Causes Delay in Games Over Festival Weekend

PHOENIX, ARIZONA – The weather conditions were again unusual for Phoenix, Arizona Friday and Saturday morning. Ice on Field 14 forced a game between Maine Majestix and the Edge to be postponed to 8:00pm Friday evening. Frost on multiple fields Saturday morning forced all games to be once again postponed to an 8:15am start.

A cold front that arrived in Phoenix on Wednesday has brought drier air and winds, causing cold mornings and evenings with temperatures in the low 20’s and a freeze watch throughout many parts of Arizona. In fact, Phoenix experienced the coldest Thanksgiving since 1933.

“The only downfall so far has been the weather with frost on the fields in the morning,” said Genel Burwell, Reach 11 Park Manager. “To maintain the quality of the fields, we can not allow anyone on them when there is a frost. Unfortunately, this has caused game times to be pushed back or rescheduled, but there really is nothing we can do about mother nature.”

Apart from the weather, National Hockey Festival has seen record breaking numbers this year with more family members traveling and more hotel rooms being booked. Vendors at Reach 11 have been busy selling field hockey equipment and apparel and other local businesses have been positively impacted by the number of people attending Festival.

“Families seem pleased with the new venue and are excited to be here. We have received nothing but positive feedback from Festival attendees,” said Burwell.

Results from the weekend’s games can be viewed on the USA Field Hockey website at www.usafieldhockey.com.
