The U.S. Olympic Team for Women’s Field Hockey fought to a 0-0 draw with Great Britain on Monday. The match was their final game of Olympic Games pool play. The draw slotted the USA in fourth place in Pool B standings, with a record of one win, one loss, and three ties.
Germany and Argentina, the top two teams from Pool B, will continue on to the semifinal rounds. The draw secured third place for Great Britain.
Strikers Angela Loy (Loysville,Pa./Old Dominion) and Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa./Maryland) both have three goals to lead the USA.
Spain, the fourth place team in Pool A, has been outscored 12-4 through pool play. The two victories came against a disappointing Korea team, 2-1, and the winless South Africa, 1-0.
Spain qualified for the Olympic Games in the same manner as the USA: through one of the three WorldHockey Olympic Qualifying Tournaments. Spain defeated Azerbaijan in the Baku-hosted championship, outscoring their opponents 25-1 in pool play. The USA defeated Belgium in Kazan, Russia; Korea was the winner of the third tournament, held in Victoria, Canada.
Forward Silvia Munoz is team captain. Striker Furia Camon is the most experienced Spanish player with over 180 caps. Goalkeeper Maria Jesus Rosa and defender Silvia Bonasarte are also team veterans.
Spain has converted four of nineteen penalty corners through the tournament to account for all their goals, and only 24 shots on goal. The USA has converted five of 29 penalty corners, with 57 shots.
