BEIJING (AP) The U.S. women's field hockey team was eliminated from Olympic medal contention Monday after a scoreless draw with Britain.

The Americans had 11 penalty corners, but never converted. Seven of those came in the first half, including one with time expired.

Britain had a chance to win in the closing seconds, but failed to convert on a penalty corner.

Britain (2-1-2) still has an outside chance of medaling, but needs Argentina to lose badly to winless New Zealand on Monday night to reach the semifinals.

The Americans (1-1-3), ranked 11th in the world, finished fourth out of six teams in Pool B. They had draws with No. 2 Argentina, No. 5 Japan and No. 9 Britain, and beat No. 8 New Zealand. Their only loss was to 2004 Olympic champion Germany.

The Americans won their Olympic qualifier in April and made it to the Olympics for the first time since getting an automatic bid as the host nation in 1996. They haven't medaled since 1984.
