The U.S. Olympic Team for Women’s Field Hockey faces Great Britain in their final game of pool play on Monday, August 18 at the Olympic Green Hockey Stadium. Game time is 6:00pm. The game will be televised live on the USA Network the USA-HD at 6:00am Eastern. The game will also be available live online at www.nbcolympics.com.
The United States - with a record of one win, one loss, and two draws - currently sits fourth in Pool B standings with five points and making a final push for the medal rounds. A win is three points in pool standings, one point for a draw, and none for a loss.
Germany, however, did not help the USA’s medal hopes with their 4-0 loss against second place Argentina Saturday night. The victory gave Argentina a total of eight points and a firm grip on second place. Goal differential is one of the first tie-breakers in the standings, so the margin of Argentina’s victory is also significant. Germany has nine points and is still in first place with three wins and one loss.
To advance to the semifinal rounds, the USA must defeat Great Britain by at least five goals AND Argentina must lose their match against New Zealand. If Argentina wins or draws against New Zealand, the United States are eliminated from medal round contention. The Argentina / New Zealand match directly follows the USA contest at 8:30pm.
Semifinal games take place on Wednesday, August 20. The medal games are Friday, August 22.
The eight remaining teams play crossover matches to determine final Olympic Games standings. The 9/10 and 7/8 contests are on Wednesday. The 11/12 and 5/6 matches are on Friday.
Great Britain, with seven points and a record of 2-1-1, are in third place in the Pool B standings. Great Britain upset Japan Saturday, 2-1, on goals from Anne Panter and Crista Cullen.
