The U.S. Olympic Team for Women’s Field Hockey faces New Zealand on Saturday, August 16 at the Olympic Green Hockey Stadium, Pitch A. Game time is 8:30am. The game will be televised tape-delayed on the USA Network and USA-HD on Saturday at 10:30am Eastern. The game is also available live on www.nbcolympics.com.
The United States team, with a record of two draws and one loss, currently sits fifth in the standings with two points. The Americans are still in contention for the semifinals, which go to the top two teams in each pool. Germany is undefeated in three games and has the inside track for the top seed in Pool B.
The United States fell to defending champions Germany, 4-2, on Thursday. Tiffany Snow (Escondido, Ca. / Old Dominion) and Angie Loy (Loysville, Pa. / Old Dominion) scored goals for the U.S., but Germany converted three of four penalty corners and pressured the American defense in the victory.
The New Zealand “Black Sticks” are winless in competition so far, and have been eliminated from semifinals contention. The Black Sticks have suffered through three 2-1 defeats in the Olympic Games from Japan, Germany and Great Britain on Thursday. Striker Gemma Flynn opened the scoring for the Black Sticks, but Great Britain regrouped in the second half to take the lead and the win.
In other Pool B action, Argentina defeated Japan, 2-1. Argentina is currently in second place with five points, and faces first place Germany on Saturday. The United States is slotted in Pool B with Argentina, Germany, Great Britain, Japan and New Zealand.
