Arena National Championships head to Indiana

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – The University of Notre Dame and Visit South Bend-Mishawaka, in partnership with USA Curling, are set to host the fifth

Arena National Championships April 25-30 at Compton Family Ice Arena.

The five-day event features the top arena-based curling teams from across the United States competing for the national title in men’s and women’s divisions. This one of USA Curling’s newer competitions, which is designed for member clubs utilizing arena ice facilities versus traditional curling clubs. This is the final – and 10th – USA Curling national championship event to be contested this season.

Teams will be grouped for round robin action, which begins Tuesday for the 14 competing women’s teams and Wednesday for the 20 men’s rinks. The San Francisco Bay Area Curling Club and the Pittsburgh Curling Club captured last year’s women’s and men’s titles, respectively. All of last year’s men’s medalists are in the field again this year – Mark Robinson’s champion rink from Pittsburgh, Jonathan Penney’s silver medalists from the Cincinnati Curling Club, and Curling Club of Houston’s bronze medalists, skipped by Christopher Doremus. The men’s field also features the 2015 champions from the Dallas-Fort Worth Curling Club, led by Jeffrey Knott.

An opening ceremony for the women’s competitors will take place at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday followed by the first round of competition. The men’s opening ceremony is scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday with the first draw of action at 4:30 p.m.

After the conclusion of the round robin, the top two men’s teams from each pool will advance to the quarterfinals on Sunday morning. The top two teams in each of the three women’s divisions will advance to the playoffs with the two teams with the best record and/or Draw Shot Challenge (DSC) score advancing directly to the semifinals on Friday afternoon. The women’s medal games will take place at 8:30 p.m. April 28. All of the men’s playoffs will take place on April 30.

Live scores will be posted at and promoted on USA Curling’s Twitter feed (@usacurl). There is no official live webstream for this competition.

Arena-based clubs continue to gain membership with the U.S. Curling Association, which now includes 89 curling-only dedicated facilities and 69 clubs that are designated as arena clubs (shares ice time with other sports such as figure skating and hockey).

The 2018 USA Curling Arena National Championships will take place May 1-6, 2018, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
