USA teams finish sixth and ninth at World Juniors in Switzerland

USA ladies finish sixth, men ninth at 2014 World Junior Championships in Switzerland

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - USA's teams finished sixth and ninth at the 2014 World Junior Championships in Flims, Switzerland, as the round robin concluded last night at Waldhaus Arena.

Cory Christensen (Duluth, Minn.) and teammates Mackenzie Lank (Lewiston, N.Y.), Anna Bauman (Duluth, Minn.), Anna Hopkins (Bismarck, N.D.), and Tina Persinger (Fairbanks, Alaska) finished on a winning note as they defeated playoff-bound Russia, 8-7. The win places the U.S. at 5-4 in the round robin for a sixth place finish. 

Jake Vukich (Seattle) and teammates Evan McAuley (Sammamish, Wash.), Luc Violette (Granite Falls, Wash.), Kyle Lorvick (Seattle), and Alex Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.) lost to Russia in an extra end, 8-7, to finish 2-7 and in ninth place in their first appearance at this event.  

In the women's playoffs today, Korea (7-2) and Canada (7-2) will meet in the Page 1-2 game while Russia (6-3) and Sweden (6-3) play the Page 3-4 match. The winner of the 1-2 game advances to the final with the losing side playing the winner of the 3-4 game in the single semifinal game on Tuesday night.

In the men's playoffs, Norway (7-2) and Scotland (6-3) will face off in the Page 1-2 game with Canada (6-3) and Switzerland (6-3) playing in the Page 3-4 showdown at 12 p.m. Tuesday. The men's semifinal will follow at 6 p.m. between the loser of the Page 1-2 game and the winner of the Page 3-4 match. The winner of the semifinal game moves to the final to take on the winning side of the Page 1-2 game.
