Minnesota's Smith rink wins back-to-back senior women's titles

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - Margie Smith will make a third world championship appearance for the U.S. after leading her team to the 2014 USA Curling Senior National Championship title this weekend.

Smith (St. Paul, Minn.) and teammates Norma O'Leary (Silver Bay, Minn.), Debbie Dexter (St. Paul, Minn.), and Shelly Kosal (Edgerton, Wis.) defended their title and will now represent the U.S. at the 2014 World Senior Championships April 22-29 in Dumfries, Scotland.

The Smith rink competed against six other teams in a single round robin competition with a double knockout provision at the Eau Claire (Wis.) Curling Club. By Saturday night, the Smith team had the championship wrapped up with a perfect record with just this morning's final round robin game to play. With the second-place team already posting two losses, no team was able to duel the Smith rink when today rolled around.

In this morning's final matchup, Smith finished out the competition with a 9-2 win over Wisconsin's Pam Oleinik, a three-time champion in this event, for a 6-0 record. Washington's Sharon Vukich, a two-time U.S. senior champ, finished second with a 4-2 record.

This will be the third appearance at the World Seniors for Smith, who skipped teams in 2013 (7th) and 2011 (4th), as well as Dexter and Kosal. 2014 will mark the second straight time that O'Leary will represent the U.S.

Final round robin standings:
Margie Smith (Minnesota) 6-0
Sharon Vukich (Washington) 4-2
Pam Oleinik (Wisconsin) 3-3
Debra Horn (Ohio) 2-4
Karen Ronk (Wisconsin) 2-4
Sandra McMakin (Maryland) 2-4
Lori Mountford (Wisconsin) 2-4
