2014 World Junior Championship begin Wednesday in Switzerland

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - Teams skipped by Cory Christensen (Duluth, Minn.) and Jake Vukich (Seattle) take the ice Wednesday at the Waldhaus Arena as the 2014 World Junior Championships get underway in Flims, Switzerland.

Christensen and teammates Christensen and teammates Mackenzie Lank (Lewiston, N.Y.), Anna Bauman (Duluth, Minn.), Anna Hopkins (Bismarck, N.D.), and Tina Persinger (Fairbanks, Alaska) will compete in a nine-game round robin against Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Italy, Korea, Russia, Scotland, Sweden, and Switzerland. Their first game is scheduled for 8 a.m. Wednesday (all times local) against Switzerland's Corina Mani rink.

Vukich (Seattle) and teammates Evan McAuley (Sammamish, Wash.), Luc Violette (Granite Falls, Wash.), Kyle Lorvick (Seattle), and Alex Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.) will compete against Austria, Canada, China, Italy, Norway, Russia, Scotland, Sweden, and Switzerland. They open play at 12 p.m. Wednesday, also against Switzerland (Yannick Schwaller).

Scotland is the men's defending champion while Russia won the women's division last year in Sochi, Russia. After the conclusion of the round robin, the top four teams on each side will qualify to the Page playoffs, which begin on Monday for the women.

A live broadcast of the 2014 World Juniors will be presented by the World Curling Federation. A complete game schedule, as well as the YouTube link to the live action, is posted at http://wjcc2014.curlingevents.com. Live scores, standings and photos also will be posted at the WCF website. You can also follow along on Twitter via USA Curling's Twitter feed (@terry_usacurl) as well as the WCF's (@worldcurling or @WCFmedia) using the hashtags #WJCC2014 or #curling.

This is the third straight World Juniors appearance for Christensen, who skipped Team USA in 2012 and was the alternate last year. Lank played lead for Team USA at the 2011 World Women's Championship in Denmark. Bauman played with Christensen both at the 2012 World Juniors and the 2013 Winter World University Games. This is the rookie appearance for the junior men, with the exception of alternate Fenson, who was a member of Team USA at last year's World Juniors. The U.S. teams qualified to the 2014 World Juniors after winning the 2014 USA Curling Junior National Championships last month in Seattle.
