Minnesota women clinch playoff berth; Washington men hand Illinois first loss at the 2014 USA Curling Club National Championships
(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - Washington's Joel Larway rink stole two points in the extra end to edge Illinois' Jeff Wright, 11-9, and tie Wright for first place, while Norma O'Leary's Minnesota I team won two more games to remain perfect at 7-0 2014 USA Curling Club National Championships at the Two Harbors Curling Club in Two Harbors, Minn. O'Leary became the first team to qualify for the semi-finals.
Wednesday was a great day for Ann Drummie's Maryland rink, which secured their first two wins of the championship, beating Arizona (Tracy Heuerman) 12-11 in the morning, then upset North Dakota II (Ann Podoll), 11-9. Trailing 9-3 after eight ends, Drummie bombed Podoll with six and followed with a steal of two in the afternoon to earn victory.
The leaders in the men's field represented clubs in or near big cities: Seattle, Chicago, Boston and St. Paul. By contrast, the top four women's teams represented just two states, Minnesota and North Dakota, and smaller towns, Duluth, Grand Forks and Fargo. Minnesota and North Dakota qualified two women's teams each based on their high level of state playdown participation.
Daily round robin play at the Two Harbors Curling Club concludes Friday morning for the 10 men's and 10 women's teams, who qualified for the Club Nationals through a regional playoff system. The top four men's and top four women's teams will then advance to their respective semi-finals Friday evening with finals Saturday afternoon.
