Illinois men, Minnesota women lead at the 2014 USA Curling Club National Championship

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - After four draws Tuesday, the Illinois rink led by Jeff Wright, at 6-0, and the Norma O'Leary team representing Minnesota, at 5-0, lead the men's and women's round robin divisions in the 2014 USA Curling Club National Championships at the Two Harbors Curling Club in Two Harbors, Minn.

Wright and his reigning Senior Men's National Champions (age 50 and over) rolled once again, although they met surprising resistance from winless Colorado's Phil Moir, stealing a point in the final end to lock in their 10-7 win. Roused, Wright then crushed a strong Minnesota team skipped by Peter Stolt in the night game, 9-1. Former national men's champion Joel Larway led his Washington rink to convincing wins over Alaska (Dave Flippo), 11-1, and North Dakota (David Pengilly), 9-1. Massachusetts' Peter Bialek team split, beating Oregon (Jim Smoltz) 10-3, then suffering a 10-7 upset at the hands of Michigan's Chad Roberts rink. In other results, North Dakota beat Michigan, 7-4; Minnesota beat Wisconsin (Steve Day), 7-4; Wisconsin rebounded to beat Oregon, 7-5; and Alaska beat Colorado 8-4.

On the women's side, O'Leary's Minnesota I team won their one Tuesday game, beating North Dakota II (Ann Podoll) 7-4. Minnesota II, skipped by Jamie Kraus, had to steal in the 10th end to win 7-6 against upset-minded Ann Drummie's Maryland rink. Ohio (Jennifer Paine) dominated winless Arizona (Tracey Heuerman), 11-1. Wisconsin (Lori Karst) split, stealing three in the ninth end to beat Washington (Miyo Konno) 8-6, and losing 11-3 to Beth Bohlman's North Dakota I team. Washington also split, losing 10-5 to California (Sarah Walsh) after beating the Badgers.

Daily round robin play at the Two Harbors Curling Club concludes Friday morning for the 10 men's and 10 women's teams, who qualified for the Club Nationals through a regional playoff system. The top  four men's and top four women's teams will then advance to their respective semi-finals Friday evening with finals Saturday afternoon.
