2014 USA Curling Club National Championship underway in Minnesota
(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - The top seeded teams continued to do well during a very busy Sunday at the 2014 USA Curling Club National Championships at the Two Harbors Curling Club in Two Harbors, Minn.
In men's competition, Minnesota's Peter Stolt rink edged Michigan's Chad Roberts, 8-6, in a seesaw game on the strength of a three in the final end. Washington's Joel Larway rink beat Oregon's Jim Smoltz, using a score of four in the seventh end to take a three-point lead and win, 9-7. Jeff Wright's Illinois team dominated Alaska's David Flippo, 10-5. Peter Bialek's Massachusetts team cruised to a 10-2 win over Wisconsin's Steve Day.
In afternoon and evening draws, North Dakota's Dave Pengilly beat Colorado's Phil Moir, 9-8, cracking a five end along the way. In the late games, Wisconsin rebounded strongly to shut out Alaska 11-0, and Massachusetts edged Washington 8-7. In an extra end, Michigan stole three to beat Oregon, 11-8.
In a battle of the "two's" in women's competition, Minnesota II's Jamie Kraus routed North Dakota II's Beth Bohlman, 9-3. In a close game of western rivals, Washington's Miyo Konno overcame an early deficit to beat Arizona's Tracy Heuermann, 10-7. Minnesota 1's Norma O'Leary rink beat Ohio's Jennifer Paine, 10-4, and North Dakota 1 beat Maryland, 10-4.
In afternoon games, Wisconsin's Lori Karst rink dominated Arizona, 10-1; Washington's Miyo Konno dispatched North Dakota II's Ann Podoll, 12-4, and Minnesota II needed five in the ninth end to overcome California's Sarah Walsh, 9-6. In the evening game, another extra end battle saw Ohio break into the win column, 9-8, with a steal of one against Maryland's Ann Drummie team.
Daily round robin play at the Two Harbors Curling Club concludes Friday morning for the 10 men's and 10 women's teams, who qualified for the Club Nationals through a regional playoff system. The top four men's and top four women's teams will then advance to their respective semi-finals Friday evening with finals Saturday afternoon.
