USA teams prepare for playoffs in Scotland

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - Margie Smith and the U.S. ladies won their seventh game this morning to remain undefeated at the 2014 World Senior Curling Championships in Dumfries, Scotland. They'll take that perfect record into tomorrow's semifinals in search of USA's first-ever gold medal at this event.

The U.S. ladies got past the Czech Republic's Miroslava Vareckova rink, 7-4, to finish the round robin at 7-0. "We felt really good. We were a little bit too aggressive in a couple of ends, but we played well as a team. Now we are ready to go. A whole new tournament starts, and we just need to play our game," said Smith, who led the U.S. ladies into the playoffs in 2011, finishing fourth.

Jeff Wright (Libertyville, Ill.) and the U.S. men will play Ireland (6-1) in the quarterfinals at 1:30 p.m. CT today at the Dumfries Ice Bowl. Wright and teammates Russ Armstrong (Lake Bluff, Ill.), Jim Wilson (Chicago), Nils Johansson (Highland Park, Ill.), and Russ Brown (Lake Forest, Ill.) finished the round robin last night with a 6-1 record. Norway defeated the Netherlands, 7-6, today to earn the final quarterfinal berth.

Smith (St. Paul, Minn.) and teammates Norma O'Leary (Silver Bay, Minn.), Debbie Dexter (St. Paul, Minn.), and Shelly Kosal (Edgerton, Wis.) and Canada's Colleen Pinkney have secured semifinal berths.
