USA senior teams remain perfect in Scotland

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - After two days of competition, the U.S. senior teams remain perfect in round robin play at the 2014 World Senior Curling Championships in Dumfries, Scotland, with a combined six wins. USA's doubles team slipped to 1-1 as the 2014 World Mixed Doubles Championship also swept along today at the Dumfries Ice Bowl.

Jeff Wright (Libertyville, Ill.) helped the American men improve to 3-0 with two wins today. In the morning draw, Wright and teammates Russ Armstrong (Lake Bluff, Ill.), Russ Brown (Lake Forest, Ill.), Jim Wilson (Chicago), and Nils Johansson (Highland Park, Ill.) defeated New Zealand's Peter Becker rink, 10-1. Then in the night session, the U.S. scored four points late in the game to defeat Russia's Sergey Korolenko rink, 9-3.

Margie Smith and the U.S. ladies remain undefeated in the senior women's division after adding two wins today. In the morning round, the U.S. ladies topped Austria's Veronika Huber rink, 10-3.  Smith (St. Paul, Minn.) and teammates Norma O'Leary (Silver Bay, Minn.), Debbie Dexter (St. Paul, Minn.), and Shelly Kosal (Edgerton, Wis.) scored a six-ender in yesterday's competition and showed their offensive prowess again today with five points in the sixth end that led the Austrians to concede. In the afternoon session the U.S. ladies then dismantled New Zealand's Wendy Becker rink, 8-5, to improve to 3-0.

USA's Joyance Meechai (New York City) and Steve Gebauer (Mendota Heights, Minn.) could not catch up to Norway's team of Kristin Skaslien and Magnus Nedregotten in the 2014 World Mixed Doubles Championship competition today after falling behind early in the game. Trailing 4-1 after three ends, the U.S. team scored a single in the fourth but then allowed Norway to add four more points over the next two ends that built to an eventual 8-4 victory for the Norwegians (2-0). USA's game tomorrow against China (2-0) will be streamed live via the World Curling Federation's YouTube Channel at www.youtube.com/WorldCurlingTV. The game is set to begin at 11:45 a.m. CT.

The U.S. senior teams return to the ice for the third day of round robin competition. The U.S. women face Japan (1-1) while the men battle Finland (1-1).
