Get involved in Olympic Day

USA Curling is partnering with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) to celebrate International Olympic Day. Olympic Day is celebrated annually on June 23rd by thousands of people in 160 countries. In addition to recognizing the modern Olympic Games, Olympic Day promotes fitness and healthy lifestyles and introduces members of the community to various Olympic Sports.

This year, curling clubs can host official Olympic Day celebrations between June 14th and June 30th. The USOC will provide an Olympic Day flag, temporary tattoos, and an electronic toolkit for registered events. The USOC will also attempt to arrange for participation of an Olympian at registered events. In addition, USA Curling can provide brochures and posters featuring our 2014 Olympic athletes.  (Member clubs can request these materials using our online form at any time.)

There are a number of ways in which your club can potentially participate.

On-ice events: Clubs curling on arena ice or dedicated clubs that have spring/summer ice may consider hosting an open house or other event open to the public.

PLEASE NOTE: Clubs will be able to charge a fee to offset costs of ice rental. However, eligible events cannot charge a fee that will bring in profits, unless the event already exists and is designed to raise profits (more details in Olympic Day Hosting Agreement).

Off-ice events: Any club with gym rocks or other rolling stones has the potential to host an event or join an existing event in their community. USA Curling (with assistance from the USOC) can help locate already existing events in your area that you may be able to join or provide you with contacts for groups such as local Boys and Girls Clubs that may be interested in an event. Another option for events could be summer camps for youth in your area.

PLEASE NOTE: For clubs without rolling stones, USA Curling has several sets of rolling stones that we regularly lend out. Some clubs also build their own rolling stones (see US Curling News article on Gym Curling for more details).

If you are interested in hosting a curling-themed Olympic Day celebration or potentially participating in an already existing event in your community, please contact Christy Hering at USA Curling with any questions or information requests at christy.hering@usacurl.org or 715-344-1199, Ext 209. All events (even those that build upon an event already established by another group) will need to be registered with the USOC under USA Curling.
