Lansing to host 2014 Arena Nationals
Lansing, Mich., has been selected to host the 2014 USA Curling Arena National Championships next summer.
After a successful inaugural event in July in Fort Wayne, Ind., the Summit Sports and Ice Complex in Lansing will host USA Curling's newest event, which supports athletes utilizing arena curling facilities for league play.
"The Summit Sports and Ice Complex is pleased to team up with the Lansing Curling Club to host the Curling Arena Nationals. We look forward to welcoming competitors to the Lansing area," said Paige Sauer, general manger for Summit Sports and Ice Complex.
The event will take place June 12-15 in partnership with the Lansing Curling Club and Greater Lansing Sports Authority.
"The Greater Lansing region is anxious to showcase our passion for on-ice events and extend hospitality to the hundreds of curlers who will visit our region for the USA Curling Arena Championships. We are excited to work with the Summit Ice and Sports Complex and the Lansing Curling Club to grow the sport of Curling, while showcasing all Greater Lansing has to offer," said Mike Price of the Greater Lansing Sports Authority.
Arena-based clubs now account for about 44 percent of USA Curling's total membership in comparison to those sites that are curling-only facilities.
"The Lansing Curling Club is excited to host the 2014 Arena National Championships. We hope to build on the success of last year's inaugural event in Fort Wayne, and are looking to enhance the championship experience for both athletes and fans alike," said Mark McElwee, event chairman and president of the Lansing Curling Club. "We are looking forward to welcoming curlers to the Great Lakes region, seeing old friends, and making new ones. This would not be possible without our fantastic partners - the Summit Ice and Sports Complex, the Greater Lansing Sports Authority, and of course USA Curling."
Thirty-two teams participated in the 2013 Arena National Championships with teams from the Dakota (Minn.) and Kalamazoo (Mich.) curling clubs taking home the women's and men's titles, respectively.
"There were a lot of terrific bids for the 2014 Arena Nationals. The Lansing Curling Club members' excitement about hosting and plan to use the event to help develop curling in their area were the deciding factors for us. Their host ice rink is also very committed and helped the club submit a very competitive bid," said Gabrielle Coleman, member of the Arena Nationals Selection Committee.
USA Curling is sponsored by AtomAmpd, Nike, Brooms Up Curling Supplies, Sitrin, and The RAM Restaurant & Brewery and is partnered with Ludus Tours, CurlingZone, and RJM Licensing, Inc.
