Playoffs set at inaugural Arena Nationals in Fort Wayne
(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – History will be stamped tomorrow as the very first champions of USA Curling’s newest championship event will be determined. After a busy day of action at the Canlan Ice Sports Arena in Fort Wayne, Ind., the playoff field for tomorrow’s semifinals are now set.
At stake tomorrow is winning the inaugural men’s and women’s titles at the 2013 Arena National Championships. Four teams clinched spots last night and the final four advanced today out of the B side of the bracket.
San Francisco’s Sarah Walsh led her team to an 8-2 victory over Anne Wiggins from the Palmetto Curling Club in South Carolina. The Walsh rink will face Stephanie Senneker’s rink from Kalamazoo, Mich., in one semifinal. Facing off in the other will be Liana Knott from the Dallas-Fort Worth Curling Club against Darcy Ellarby’s rink from the Dakota Curling Club in Burnsville, Minn. Ellarby and teammates Jennifer Witschen (Eagan, Minn.), Robyn Farm (Shakopee, Minn.), Julie Wennberg (Burnsville, Minn.), and Beth Lundquist (Eagan, Minn.) were trailing 6-3 as they headed into the final end of play against Melissa Montgomery’s rink from the Circle City Curling Club in Indianapolis. The Minnesota rink managed to score five points and punch their playoff tickets.
On the men’s side, Kalamazoo’s Garnett Eckstrand rink defeated Arizona’s Greg Gallagher to advance to the semifinals. They’ll play David Wiesen’s team from San Francisco. Colorado’s Guy Scholz got past Paul Ellarby’s Minnesota rink, 9-6, to win the other B bracket. Ellarby’s squad will face the Dallas-Fort Worth team led by Nick Myers in the other semi.
The semifinals are set for 9 a.m. ET Sunday followed by the event finals at 12:30.
In the consolation bracket, the Troy Dittberner rink from Minnesota defeated Jonathan Havercroft from Oklahoma, 7-1, to win while Jesse Hopper's Oklahoma rink got past Indiana's Denise Lampkins, 10-5, to win the women's side.
