Day one in the books in Fort Wayne at 2013 Arena Nationals

Arena Nationals underway in Fort Wayne
(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - Day one of USA Curling's newest championship event is in the books as 32 teams took the ice at the 2013 Arena National Championships at the Canlan Ice Sports Arena in Fort Wayne, Ind.
The four-day national championship, featuring 19 men's and 13 women's teams from across the United States, is being hosted by the Fort Wayne Curling Club.
Several teams remain undefeated in the double knockout championship event, which will conclude on Sunday afternoon. Minnesota's Paul Ellarby rink picked up two wins on the opening day with wins over Jonathan Havercroft's rink from the Oklahoma Curling Club, 7-5, and Phil Moir's rink from the Denver Curling Club, 10-7. Ellarby (Burnsville, Minn.) and teammates Ryan Claussen (Rochester, Minn.), Gary Mazzotta (Minneapolis, Minn.), Aaron Knewtson (Lakeville, Minn.), and Dan Wennberg (Burnsville, Minn.) return to the ice Friday afternoon.
Other men's rinks still undefeated include teams skipped by David Wiesen (San Francisco, Calif.), Garnett Eckstrand (Portage, Mich.), Guy Scholz (Green Mountain Falls, Colo.), Nick Myers (Mansfield, Texas,) Timothy Klein (Kew Gardens, N.Y.), Mark Robinson (Pittsburgh, Pa.), and Jason Fountain (Fort Wayne, Ind.), representing the home club.
In women's action, two-time U.S. senior national champion Anne Wiggins (Hendersonville, N.C.) led her Palmetto Curling Club team to two victories to remain in the hunt for the inaugural arena national title. The Wiggins rink defeated Karen Luckey (Old Brookville, N.Y.), 5-4, this morning and capped off the perfect day with a last-rock win over Jacki Temple (Glenshaw, Pa.), 10-9, tonight. The Texas ladies, led by Liana Knott (Lancaster, Texas), represented their home state well with two wins today as well. Knott and teammates Allison Peterson (Dallas, Texas), Carolyn Stewart (Richardson, Texas), and Carrie Scarlata (Richardson, Texas) earned an 8-3 victory over Denise Lampkins (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and followed up with an 8-7 win over Julie Tsamoutales (Upper Marlboro, Md.).
Kalamazoo Curling Club's Stephanie Senneker (Perry, Mich.) led her team to double victories as well. The Michigan squad of Senneker, Pamela Nelson (Kalamazoo, Mich.), Nicole Brinkmann Reeves (South Bend, Ind.), and Krista Ragotzy (Kalamzoo, Mich.) got past fellow Michigan team Lisa Hamm (Mason, Mich.), representing the Lansing Curling Club, 16-1, in the morning draw and followed up with a 10-6 win over Melissa Montgomery (Indianapolis, Ind.). Darcy Ellarby's Minnesota rink had a bye this morning and then advanced in the A Bracket tonight with a 12-7 win against Jessie Hopper (Oklahoma City, Okla.).
The 2013 Arena Nationals action picks back up on Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. ET. The top two teams from the A Bracket face the remaining two teams from the B bracket in Sunday morning's semifinals.
