USA to play NOR in tiebreaker for playoff spot in Italy

USA men to play in tiebreaker for playoff spot, USA ladies finish eight, at Winter World University Games in Italy

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - Chris Plys and the American men will play Norway in a tiebreaker game on Wednesday to try to get to the playoffs of the 2013 Winter World University Games in Trentino, Italy, at the Baselga di Pine Ice Stadium.

Plys (Duluth, Minn.) and teammates Stephen Dropkin (Southborough, Mass.), Sean Beighton (Seattle), Korey Dropkin (Southborough, Mass.), and Tom Howell (Brick, N.J.) lost to Italy's Andrea Pilzner rink in today's morning session by a 5-3 score after Italy stole points in the latter ends. In the evening session, Team USA defeated Korea's Chang Min Kim rink, 7-4, to finish the round robin with a 5-4 record. Norway defeated China to match the USA's record. The tiebreaker between USA and Norway will take place at 9 a.m. tomorrow (local time). Sweden (8-1), Canada (7-2) and Great Britain (6-3) have secured the first three semifinal spots. 

The U.S. ladies, led by Cory Christensen (Duluth, Minn.), will not advance to the playoffs. Christensen and her team of Becca Funk (McFarland, Wis.), Anna Bauman (Duluth, Minn.), Mackenzie Lank (Lewiston, N.Y.), and Sonja Bauman (Duluth, Minn.) finished the round robin with a 9-2 win over Hannah Fleming's rink from Scotland (representing Great Britain) to finish in eighth place. Russia, Switzerland, Great Britain and Korea have clinched semifinal spots on the ladies side.

The U.S. teams are competing in a round robin with the top four advancing to the semifinals on Thursday. The gold-medal games will be played on Friday. TV coverage of the men's final will be part of CBS Sports Network's coverage of the event. The air time is set for 11 a.m. ET Saturday.
