USA men even record at Winter World University Games in Italy

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - USA's Chris Plys rink kept its playoff hopes alive with a key round robin win tonight over Great Britain at the 2013 Winter World University Games in Trentino, Italy, at the Baselga di Pine Ice Stadium.

Plys (Duluth, Minn.) and teammates Stephen Dropkin (Southborough, Mass.), Sean Beighton (Seattle), Korey Dropkin (Southborough, Mass.), and Tom Howell (Brick, N.J.) lost to Switzerland's Mario Freiberger, 9-4, in the morning session. The Swiss took an early 3-1 advantage after stealing a single in the third end. The U.S. answered with a deuce and a single steal to pull ahead 4-3. It was all Swiss thereafter as Freiberger's rink scored three points in the seventh and followed up with a steal of three to put the game out of reach for the Americans.

In the night session, Plys and the American men stole three points in the fifth end to pull ahead of Great Britain's Kyle Smith rink and held on for an 8-3 victory to improve to 3-3 in the standings. That record equates to a four-way tie for third place. The men have three more round robin games to go. The top four will advance to the semifinals.

The U.S. ladies have not fared as well in the round robin so far. Cory Christensen (Duluth, Minn.) and her team of Becca Funk (McFarland, Wis.), Anna Bauman (Duluth, Minn.), Mackenzie Lank (Lewiston, N.Y.), and Sonja Bauman (Duluth, Minn.) saw their record drop to 1-5 after a 7-2 loss to Anna Hasselborg's rink from Sweden this afternoon.

The semifinals will take place on Thursday with the winning sides advancing to play for gold on Friday. TV coverage of the men's final will be part of CBS Sports Network's coverage of the event. The air time is set for 11 a.m. ET Friday.
