USA ladies earn first win in Italy

USA ladies earn first win at Winter World University Games in Italy

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - Cory Christensen (Duluth, Minn.) led the U.S. ladies to their first win of the round robin this evening at the 2013 Winter World University Games in Trentino, Italy, at the Baselga di Pine Ice Stadium.

Christensen (Duluth, Minn.) and her team of Becca Funk (McFarland, Wis.), Anna Bauman (Duluth, Minn.), Mackenzie Lank (Lewiston, N.Y.), and Sonja Bauman (Duluth, Minn.) lost to Russia, whose team features three players from the women's Olympic team for Sochi, by a score of 9-1 in the morning session. In the evening, the team battled Italy's Giada Mosaner and scored a single in the 10th end to earn the team's first win, 6-5. 

Chris Plys (Duluth, Minn.) and teammates Stephen Dropkin (Southborough, Mass.), Sean Beighton (Seattle), Korey Dropkin (Southborough, Mass.), and Tom Howell (Brick, N.J.) dropped to 2-2 after a 7-4 loss to China's Xiu Ma rink in the afternoon session.

The U.S. teams are competing in a round robin with the top four advancing to the semifinals on Dec. 19. The gold-medal games will be played on Dec. 20. TV coverage of the men's final will be part of CBS Sports Network's coverage of the event. The air time is set for 11 a.m. ET on Dec. 20.
