(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - 2010 Olympian Chris Plys led Team USA to a win this afternoon in the opening round of the 2013 Winter World University Games in Trentino, Italy. Cory Christensen and the American ladies, however, did not fare as well.

Plys (Duluth, Minn.) and teammates Stephen Dropkin (Southborough, Mass.), Sean Beighton (Seattle), Korey Dropkin (Southborough, Mass.), Tom Howell (Brick, N.J.) defeated Norway's Markus Hoeiberg rink, 7-4, as the round robin got underway at the Baselga di Pine Ice Stadium.

Christensen (Duluth, Minn.) and her team of Becca Funk (McFarland, Wis.), Anna Bauman (Duluth, Minn.), Mackenzie Lank (Lewiston, N.Y.), and Sonja Bauman (Duluth, Minn.) fell to Switzerland's Michelle Jaeggi, 12-0, in the morning. The team played Japan's Sayakoa Yoshimura in the evening session and stole two points in the ninth end to tie the game 7-7. Japan was able to secure three points in the final end to earn the win and improve to 2-0.

The U.S. teams are competing in a round robin with the top four advancing to the semifinals on Dec. 19. The gold-medal games will be played on Dec. 20. TV coverage of the men's final will be part of CBS Sports Network's coverage of the event. The air time is set for 11 a.m. ET on Dec. 20.
