Team USA set to compete in Winter World University Games in Italy
(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - Led by 2010 Olympian Chris Plys and 2012 U.S. junior champion Cory Christensen, Team USA will compete in the 2013 Winter World University Games Dec. 12-21 in Trentino, Italy.
Plys (Duluth, Minn.) and teammates Stephen Dropkin (Southborough, Mass.), Sean Beighton (Seattle), Korey Dropkin (Southborough, Mass.), Tom Howell (Brick, N.J.) will compete against teams from Norway, Czech Republic, Sweden, China, Switzerland, Great Britain, Canada, Italy, and Korea.
Christensen (Duluth, Minn.) is teamed up with Becca Funk (McFarland, Wis.), Anna Bauman (Duluth, Minn.), Mackenzie Lank (Lewiston, N.Y.), and Sonja Bauman (Duluth, Minn.) will compete against Switzerland, Korea, Russia, Italy, Sweden, Canada, China, Japan, and Great Britain.
Teams will play in a round robin with the top four advancing to the semifinals on Dec. 19. The gold-medal games will be played on Dec. 20. TV coverage of the men's final will be part of CBS Sports Network's coverage of the event. The air time is set for 11 a.m. ET on Dec. 20.
The Winter Universiade is an international sporting and cultural festival, which is staged every two years in a different city. The program of the Winter Universiade currently includes six compulsory sports (10 compulsory disciplines) and one or two optional sports chosen by the host country. Curling has been featured each year since 2003. Plys was on the American team that won gold at this event in 2007. The U.S. women have yet to medal.
