Championship final set at 2014 USA Curling Mixed Doubles Championship in Medford
(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - One more game to play and the champions of the 2014 USA Curling Mixed Doubles National Championship will be known as the final day of competition takes place in Medford, Wis.
In this morning's semifinals at the Medford Curling Club, the defending champions - Pete and Maureen Stolt of Plymouth, Minn. - were the first to qualify for the final after defeating Washington's Sharon Vukich, who won the title in 2010, and David Cornfield, 7-3.
Joining the Stolts in the final for the first time is the team of Joyance Meechai (New York City, N.Y.) and Steven Gebauer (Minneapolis, Minn.) after they handed the team of Sean Murray (Hartland, Wis.) and Emilia Juocys (Rochester Hills, Mich.) their only loss of the week, 8-5.
The championship final gets underway today at 12 p.m. CT. Live scoring is available at www.usacurl.org. The winning team will be nominated to represent the U.S. at the 2014 World Mixed Doubles Championship, which will take place April 22-29 in Dumfries, Scotland.
The Stolts took a 4-0 lead after three ends against Vukich and Cornfield and never relented the lead. The Seattle-based team pulled within a point after scoring a deuce in the sixth but couldn't keep the Stolts off the scoreboard in the next end as the 2013 champions sealed the win with two points in the seventh.
It was a similar scenario in the other semifinal as Meechai and Gebauer took a 6-1 lead after scoring four points in the second end and stealing singles in the next two ends of play. Murray and Juocys battled back with four points over the next two ends but were kept off the scoreboard in the final two ends as Meechai and Gebauer moved on to their first championship final in this event.

Meechai-Gebauer 041 100 11 - 8
