Teams qualify for 2013 Junior Nationals

Two teams from High Performance Program qualify for 2013 Junior Nationals after playoff in Wisconsin
(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - Teams skipped by Miranda Solem (Cohasset, Minn.) and Korey Dropkin (Southborough, Mass.) have pre-qualified for the 2013 USA Curling Junior National Championships after a playoff held during USA Curling's High Performance Camp Sept. 14-16 in Rice Lake, Wis.
In keeping with USA Curling's High Performance Program goals of building toward long-term sustained competitive success, one men's team and one women's team from within the 2012-13 Project 2018 Program had the opportunity to earn a berth for the 2013 Junior Nationals instead of going through the regional playdown process.
The four teams - two men's and two women's - played a best-of-three series during the three-day camp at the Rice Lake Curling Club. Solem and teammates Vicky Persinger (Fairbanks, Alaska), Karlie Koenig (Oconomowoc, Wis.) and Chelsea Solem (Cohasset, Minn.) defeated 2012 U.S. junior champion Cory Christensen (Duluth, Minn.) two games to one. On the men's side, Dropkin and teammates Thomas Howell III (Brick, N.J.), Mark Fenner (Bemidji, Minn.), Alex Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.) and Connor Hoge (Southborough, Mass.) defeated the Ethan Meyers rink twice to earn their berth (Dropkin and Howell III are defending junior national champions).
The Meyers and the Christensen rinks will now enter their respective regional playdowns in December to try to earn berths to the 2013 Junior Nationals, which will take place Jan. 26-Feb. 2 at the Broomstones Curling Club in Wayland, Mass.
