Women's playoff teams determined at 2010 Junior Nationals

Jan. 29, 2010, 10:42 a.m. (ET)

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - North Dakota's Amanda Tucker rink clinched a spot in the Page 1-2 playoff game with an 11-5 win over Minnesota II's Miranda Solem this afternoon at the 2010 USA Curling Junior Nationals in Bemidji, Minn. This sets up a matchup between North Dakota I and Minnesota I, led by Alexandra Carlson, the No. 1-seeded team for the playoffs.

Joining Tucker and Carlson are Wisconsin I's Becca Hamilton and Jillian Walker's Massachusetts rink for the playoffs at 2 p.m. Friday at the Bemidji Curling Club. Hamilton and Walker will square off in the Page 3-4 game. The winner of the 1-2 game goes straight to Saturday's final while the losing team plays the winner of the 3-4 game in the semifinal Friday night.

Tucker (St. Thomas, N.D.) and teammates Jesa Legacie (Edmore, N.D.), Rachel Tharalson (Hoople, N.D.) and Anna Hopkins (Bismarck, N.D.) never trailed in the match which eliminated Solem's team from the playoff hunt. The four-some started with a three-ender and built the lead to 8-3 by the seventh end after stealing several ends. Another three-ender in the ninth end prompted the handshake from Solem to eventually end the match.

Wisconsin's Hamilton rink handed Carlson's team its first loss of the week when Hamilton was able to steal a point in the 10th for the win for teammates Karlie Koenig (Oconomowoc, Wis.), Jenna Haag (Milton, Wis.) and Grace Gabower (Janesville, Wis.).

Walker (Sudbury, Mass.) and teammates Nikki Rossetti (Framingham, Mass.), Nicole Arsenault (Brick, N.J.) and Abigail Morrison (Falmouth, Mass.) started out strong with four points against New York's Katlyn Beebe but had to hold on for the 9-6 win to grab the final playoff berth.

Laura Murphy's Massachusetts II team posted its first win of the week in the team's final opportunity, posting a 9-4 win over Vicky Persinger's team from Alaska. Murphy (Falmouth, Mass.) and teammates Emily Walker (Sudbury, Mass.), Kathryn Annand (Hollis, N.H.) and Laura Bernier (Upton, Mass.) scored in the game's first four ends and never let up. Ann Podoll's team from North Dakota ended the week on a winning note as they bested Kimberly Rhyme's Wisconsin II rink, 8-6.

Playoffs get underway on Friday at 2 p.m. followed by the page semifinal at 7. The finals are set for Saturday at 10 a.m. (women) and 1:30 p.m. (men). The winning teams move on to represent the USA at the 2010 World Junior Championships March 6-13 in Flims, Switzerland.
