USA women eliminated from play-off hunt at 2009 World Juniors

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (March 11, 2009) - The American junior women's team was eliminated from play-off contention Wednesday afternoon after falling to Russia 9-3 at the 2009 World Junior Championships at the Vancouver Olympic Centre.

The U.S. women finish out the round robin tomorrow morning against Denmark (2-6). The Russian women, led by Margarita Fomina, quickly jumped ahead of USA team of Alexandra Carlson (Wayzata, Minn.), Tabitha Peterson (Eagan, Minn.), Tara Peterson (Eagan, Minn.) and Sophie Brorson (Duluth, Minn.) and scored multiple points each time they had the last-rock advantage. Meanwhile, the American ladies struggled with the offense.

With one game remaining in the round robin, the four playoff teams are already determined - Canada, Russia, Switzerland and Scotland each boast 6-2 records. The USA is next at 4-4. The final round robin game will help determine playoff seeding.

The U.S. men return to the ice at 8:30 a.m. Thursday against Canada (7-1) and at 5:30 p.m. to take on China (3-4) to conclude the round robin
