2009 World Wheelchair Championship gets underway SaturdaySTEVENS POINT, Wis. (Feb. 19, 2009) - Team USA is set to begin play Saturday afternoon at the 2009 World Wheelchair Championship in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Led by Augusto Perez (East Syracuse, N.Y.), Team USA is hoping to improve upon the bronze medal they won last year in Switzerland. The same team is back wearing Team USA with James Pierce (North Syracuse, N.Y.), James Joseph (New Hartford, N.Y.) and Jacqueline Kapinowski (Point Pleasant, N.J.). New at the alternate position is Pat McDonald (Orangevale, Calif.).
They start off the round robin against China at 12:30 p.m. PT at the curling venue being used for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
Other competing nations include Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Scotland, Canada, Norway and Korea. Norway is the defending champion. USA's bronze in 2008 was the first medal for the wheelchair curling program. Perez was named 2008 USA Curling Male Athlete of the Year for his performance.
