STEVENS POINT, Wis. (Feb. 15, 2009) -
Six-time national champion Pustovar wins senior men's title
Six-time U.S. men's national champion Paul Pustovar (Hibbing, Minn.) can now finally add senior men's champion to his resume as he led his team to a 4-1 win over Seppo Sormunen's rink this afternoon to capture the 2009 U.S. Senior Men's Championship at the Rice Lake Curling Club.
Pustovar and teammates Brian Simonson (Hibbing, Minn.), Tom Harms (Pengilly, Minn.), Don Mohawk (Nashwauk, Minn.) and John Kokotovich (Hibbing, Minn.) finish the competition with a 7-2 record and will now represent the U.S. at the 2009 World Senior Championships April 24-May 3 in Dunedin, New Zealand. The women's representatives were decided last weekend. Sharon Vukich's team from Seattle won the title.
Pustovar's team began the game with the last rock advantage but only managed a single. After Sormunen (Duluth, MInn.), Stan Vinge (Waunakee, Wis.), Wally Henry (Beaver Dam, Wis.) and Jim Wilson (Winnetka, Ill.) responded with a single of their own, Pustovar's team would score the game's remaining points. Another single in the fourth end was followed up with steals in the sixth and seventh ends to win the national senior title. While this is the first senior title for Pustovar, it is the second for his teammates, who captured the title back in 2006. They'd bring home silver from the 2006 World Seniors that season. Pustovar now heads to the 2010 Olympic Team Trials, which kick off Saturday at the Broomfield Events Center in Broomfield, Colo., to play vice skip for the Todd Birr rink.
