Action continues at 2009 US Senior Men's National ChampionshipSTEVENS POINT, Wis. (Feb. 11, 2009) - It took an extra end but Seppo Sormunen's Minnesota team started off on the right foot with a 4-3 win over Maryland's Scott Edie rink Wednesday afternoon at the 2009 U.S. Senior Men's National Championship at the Rice Lake (Wis.) Curling Club.
Seppo Sormunen (Duluth, Minn.) and teammates Stan Vinge (Waunakee, Wis.), Wally Henry (Beaver Dam, Wis.) and Jim Wilson (Winnetka, Ill.) scored a key single in the ninth end to earn the victory in this low-scoring game.
Former national champion Paul Pustovar (Hibbing, Minn.) led his team to an 8-3 win over Larry Anderson of Rice Lake, Wis., to earn a share of first place with Sormunen and Dwayne Jacobson in Pool B. Jacobson (Junction City, Wis.) and teammates Richard Maskel (Green Bay, Wis.), George Godfrey (Baraboo, Wis.), Walter Erbach (Madison, Wis.) and Timothy Ebert (Fitchburg, Wis.) stole the final two ends to hand Alaska's Leland Rich rink a 5-2 loss.
In action earlier this afternoon in Pool A, Mark Arnold and Philip DeVore bettered their records to 2-0. Arnold's team knocked off the defending champions, led by Dave Russell, 10-3. Meanwhile, DeVore (Superior, Wis.) and teammates Larry Sharp (Rice Lake, Wis.), Jeffrey Erickson (Proctor, Minn.) and Bill Kind (Rice Lake, Wis.) turned up the heat in the second half of their match to better Stuart Graves of Massachusetts, 7-2.
Minnesota's James Jerylo Jr. posted his first win with a 7-4 victory over Jeff Wright of Illinois. Ken Neidhart's team from Wisconsin also got in the win column for the first time with a 12-4 defeat of Walter Ehlert, also of Wisconsin.
Action continues at 8 tonight. After the round robin, the top two teams in each pool advance to the playoffs on Saturday night.
