Feb. 11, 2009, 7:08 p.m. (ET)

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - Sean Beighton's Washington rink improved to 4-2 to stay in the playoff hunt Wednesday morning at the 2009 USA Curling Junior National Championships at the Lake Region Curling Club in Devils Lake, N.D.

Beighton (Edmonds, Wash.) and teammates Derrick McLean (Bothell, Wash.), Sam Galey (Seattle) and Joe Purvis (Kenmore, Wash.) never trailed in defeating North Dakota II's Evan Workin rink, 9-2. Beighton's team scored the game's first four points to quickly build a lead the Workin rink wouldn't overcome.

With three games left in the round robin, the Washington team is tied for third place with Jerod Roland's North Dakota I rink. Roland (Petersburg, N.D.) and teammates Ben Wilson (Hibbing, Minn.), Stephen Dropkin (Southborough, Mass.) and Cooper Smith (Bismarck, N.D.) were on the losing side of their match this morning with Alaska's Matt Birklid rink. Birklid's squad got off to a fast start en route to posting just their second win - 9-2 over Roland.

Alex Leichter led his Massachusetts team to a 6-3 win over fellow Grand National region rival Nate Clark of New Hampshire. With the win, Leichter (Wayland, Mass.) and teammates Jeffrey Wadsworth (Wayland, Mass.), Ryan Hallisey (Medfield, Mass.) and Jared Wydysh (Holland Patent, N.Y.) improve to 3-3 in the standings while Clark's rink slips to 2-4.

In the lone women's game this morning, Amanda Tucker (St. Thomas, N.D.), Nikki Rossetti (Framingham, Mass.), Mackenzie Lank (Lewiston, N.Y.) and Madisson Lank (Lewiston, N.Y.) bested New York's Katlyn Beebe rink, 13-4, with two key four-enders to seal their second win of the week.

Action continues with games at noon, 4 and 8 today. Live scoring of the 2009 Junior Nationals can be found online at www.usacurl.org/curlingrocks. Click on the scoreboard link from there.

The winning teams will represent the U.S. at the 2009 World Junior Championships, March 5-15 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
