Feb. 10, 2009, 4:35 p.m. (ET)
STEVENS POINT, Wis. - Nina Spatola's Wisconsin I women's team won its fifth consecutive game to remain in first place Tuesday morning at the 2009 USA Curling Junior National Championships at the Lake Region Curling Club in Devils Lake, N.D.

Spatola (McFarland, Wis.) and teammates Molly Bonner (Virginia, Minn.), Becca Hamilton (McFarland, Wis.) and Anna Plys (Duluth, Minn.) defeated New York's Katlyn Beebe rink, 9-3, after jumping out to a big lead early. Spatola scored four points in the opening end and stole consecutive ends to springboard to a 6-0 lead after just three ends. Beebe (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and teammates Nicole Arsenault (Brick, N.J.), Rebecca Andrew (Towson, Md.) and Abigail Morrison (Falmouth, Mass.) couldn't overcome the early lead and fall to 3-2 in the standings.

In other women's action this morning, Miranda Solem led her Minnesota II team to a 10-7 win over in-state rival Alex Carlson and her Minnesota I squad. A costly steal of three points in the final end put the brakes on the Carlson rink's potential fifth straight win. Instead, Solem (Cohasset, Minn.) and teammates Alexandra Schieber (Portage, Wis.), Julie Lilla (Centerville, Wis.) and Chelsea Solem (Cohasset, Minn.) improve to 3-2 with the elbowing for playoff positions continues.

Ann Podoll (Fargo, N.D.) led her North Dakota II rink to an 8-7 win over Kaye Hufman of Alaska. This was the first win for the Junior Nationals rookie team which also features Christina Lammers (Reiles Acres, N.D.), Casey Hatlevoll (Fargo, N.D.) and Vanessa Manlove (Fargo, N.D.).

In the lone men's game this morning, Wisconsin II's Blake Morton rink scored two points in the final end to defeat New Hampshire's Nate Clark rink and improve to 2-4.

Action continues with games at noon, 4 and 8 today. Live scoring of the 2009 Junior Nationals can be found online at www.usacurl.org/curlingrocks. Click on the scoreboard link from there.

The winning teams will represent the U.S. at the 2009 World Junior Championships, March 5-15 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
