Action heats up at 2009 US Senior Women's ChampionshipJANESVILLE, Wis. (Feb. 6, 2009) - After three rounds of action, Seattle's Sharon Vukich rink leads the pack at the 2009 U.S. Senior Women's Championship at the Blackhawk Curling Club.
Vukich (Seattle) and teammates Joan Fish (Hansville, Wash.), Cathie Tomlinson (Seattle) and Aija Edwards (Hansville, Wash.) improved to 2-0 with a 10-6 win tonight over Roberta Stolt's Wisconsin team. Vukich's team scored two big ends - four points in each - to pull ahead 8-1 after just three ends and held off Stolt for the win.
Kelly Stephens (Omaha, Neb.) helped her team improve to 1-1 with a 10-4 victory over Donna Purkey's rink. Stephens and teammates Joan Freeman (Toledo, Ohio), Nancy Wilhelm (Mukwonago, Wis.) and Marie Claire Janiga (Beverly Hills, Mich.) took advantage of their opportunities as they added steals of two and four en route to the win.
The 2009 U.S. Senior Men's Championship will take place next week at the Rice Lake (Wis.) Curling Club where 15 teams will compete. The national senior champions will represent the U.S. at the 2009 World Senior Championships April 24-May 3 in Dunedin, New Zealand.
