Four playoff berths determined at 2010 U.S. Mixed Doubles Championship

Dec. 05, 2009, 12 a.m. (ET)

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - The race for the playoff berths continues at the 2010 U.S. Mixed Doubles Championship at the Granite Curling Club in Seattle.

With two draws remaining in the round robin, four of the six playoff spots are determined.

Defending champion Cristin Clark (Lynnwood, Wash.) and partner Sean Beighton improved to 5-0 with a 6-3 win over Gary Mazzotta (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Michelle Summer (Maple Grove, Minn.). The team of Derrick McLean (Bothell, Wash.) and Lysa Hambley (Lynnwood, Wash.) also is undefeated in Pool A with Clark and Beighton after handing the brother-sister duo of Em Good and Jake Vukich (both of Seattle) a lopsided 8-2 loss. Those two teams will square off at 5:30 today in the final round robin match. However, the teams will be playing for playoff seeding only as both teams have earned quarterfinal spots already.

Derek Surka and Charrissa Lin (New Haven, Conn.) kept their record unblemished as well with a close 6-5 win over the Plainfield Curling Club duo Dean Gemmell (Short Hills, N.J.) and Janice Langanke (Middletown, N.J.) to lock down a playoff spot. Gemmell and Langanke will have to wait to see the result of the match tonight between the 2-2 team of Gabrielle Coleman (Mountain View, Calif.) and Barry Ivy (Livermore, Calif.) and 0-4 team of Timothy Doherty and Connie Kupferschmidt (both of St. Paul, Minn.) to see if they'll have to play a tiebreaker game for the second playoff spot in Pool B.

In Pool C, the undefeated team of Sharon Vukich (Seattle) and Mike Calcagno (Kirkland, Wash.) has earned a playoff spot. The other berth from this pool could be decided by the completion of the round robin (tiebreakers pending).

In other play this afternoon, the Maine team of Bart and Abigail Read earned its first win of the competition with an 8-5 defeat of Michigan's Ben Levy (Ypsilanti, Mich.) and Emilia Juocys (Rochester Hills, Mich.). David Cornfield (Seattle) and Leslie Frosch (Shoreline, Wash.) ended the competition on a winning note with a 7-6 defeat of Arnie Iwanick (La Center, Wash.) and Katie Kauffman (Lynnwood, Wash.).

Playoffs get underway at 8 (PT) tonight, pending tiebreakers. The championship final is slated for 3 p.m. Sunday. Live scoring will be available via www.curlingseattle.org.

The winning team of two will represent the USA at the 2010 World Mixed Doubles Championship April 15-24 in Chelyabinsk, Russia.
