(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) -- The action at the 2010 U.S. Mixed Doubles Championship in Seattle got underway earlier today in the third time this event has been contested.
Defending champion Cristin Clark, playing in her hometown club, jumped out to a perfect start today with two wins in her attempt to defend the national mixed doubles title. Her partner in the event, Sean Beighton, helped her to an 8-2 win in the opening draw over the team of Barry VanWieringen (Kenmore, Wash.) and Cynthia Kozai (Seattle). This afternoon the team also defeated Maine's Bart and Abigail Read, 11-3, to finish the day with a 2-0 record.
The team of Derek Surka and Charrissa Lin (of New Haven, Conn.) also jumped out to a 2-0 record with convincing wins as well. The duo finished second at the 2008 U.S. Mixed Doubles Championship.
The hometown teams of Derrick McLean with Lysa Hambley and Em Good and her brother Jake Vukich also finished the day with perfect records.
Action at the five-sheet curling club continues Friday with draws at (all times PT) 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.
The winning team from this event will represent the U.S. at the 2010 World Mixed Doubles in April in Russia.
