American men remain undefeated at 2009 World Seniors
(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - Paul Pustovar and the American men kept their record spotless while their counterparts suffered their first loss after Tuesday's action at the 2009 World Senior Championships at the Dunedin Ice Stadium in Dunedin, New Zealand.
Pustovar (Hibbing, Minn.) and teammates, Brian Simonson (Hibbing, Minn.), Tom Harms (Pengilly, Minn.) and Don Mohawk (Nashwauk, Minn.) handled Finland's Mauno Nummila rink, 6-4, by stealing the final two ends of play.
Sharon Vukich (Seattle) and teammates Joan Fish (Hansville, Wash.), Cathie Tomlinson (Seattle) and Aija Edwards (Hansville, Wash.) had a tougher day as they fell to Scotland's Marion Craig team, 9-2. The Scottish ladies stole the first three ends to build a 7-0 lead that was too much to overcome as the U.S. women fell to 2-1 in the standings. This was the first win for Scotland.
The round robin continues Wednesday. The U.S. women battle undefeated Canada (3-0) in the morning draw and Japan (1-2) in the evening while the men play Switzerland (2-0) in the 1:30 p.m. draw. The top two teams from each men's pool and the top four women's team at the completion of the round robin will advance to Saturday's semifinals.
