FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 23, 2008 North Dakota 2 wins gold at 2008 U.S. Mixed Championship (DETROIT) - North Dakota 2's Duane Symons rink brought home the state's first U.S. mixed title since 2001 Saturday afternoon at the 2008 U.S. Mixed National Championship. Symons (Langdon, N.D.) and teammates Val Nash (Devils Lake, N.D.), Chad Carlson (Fisher, Minn.) and Christine Mikulich (Eveleth, Minn.) held off Wisconsin's Ryan Lemke rink, 6-5, for the championship title and page in U.S. curling history. This was the fourth mixed title for the North Dakota region as titles were previously won in 2001, 1986 and 1976. North Dakota started with the last rock advantage and held onto it until being forced to one point in the second end. Back-to-back steals of one increased their lead to 3-0. Lemke (Medford, Wis.) and teammates Jackie Lemke (Medford, Wis.), Kroy Nernberger (Madison, Wis.), Becca Wood (Wausau, Wis.) and Megan O'Connell (Medford, Wis.) scored a deuce and stole a single to tie the game at 3-3 after five ends. North Dakota took back control with three in the sixth but Wisconsin would pull within one point after scoring a single and stealing yet another point. But North Dakota was able to keep the house clean and secure the win. Gold medal line score: North Dakota II* 011 100 300 0 6
