CURLING: Arizona captures bronze at 2008 U.S. Mixed

March 23, 2008 Arizona wins bronze at 2008 U.S. Mixed Championship (DETROIT) - Arizona's Fred Maxie rink brought home the state's first curling medal after defeating Derek Surka's Connecticut team, 6-5, for the bronze medal Saturday morning at the 2008 U.S. Mixed National Championship. Maxie (Phoenix) and teammates Cindy Kortebein (Knoxville, Tenn.), Richard Maskel (Green Bay, Wis.) and Jan Legacie (Edmore, N.D.), representing the Coyotes Curling Club out of Scottsdale, Ariz., took the lead for good in the fourth end with a steal of two to break a 1-1 tie. They followed up with another steal to go up 4-1 at the halfway point. After the teams exchanged singles, Surka (New Haven, Conn.) and teammates Charrissa Lin (New Haven, Conn.), Sean Murray (Edgewood, Md.) and Rachel Sethi (Falls Church, Va.) tried to rally with a deuce in the eighth end and a steal of one in the ninth to tie the game at 5-5. But, Maxie's team scored the winning point in the 10th end to earn the bronze medal. The gold-medal game is currently underway. Live scoring from the event can be found at http://www.mixed08detroit.
