CURLING: Tiebreaker game to determine final playoff berth at 2008 U.S. Mixed

March 20, 2008 Tiebreaker to determine final semifinal berth at 2008 U.S. Mixed Championship (DETROIT) - Connecticut's Derek Surka rink clinched the No. 1 playoff seed but who they'll play is still up in the air as the round robin concluded Thursday night at the 2008 U.S. Mixed National Championship at the Detroit Curling Club. Surka (New Haven, Conn.) and teammates Charrissa Lin (New Haven, Conn.), Sean Murray (Edgewood, Md.) and Rachel Sethi (Falls Church, Va.) defeated Doug Boyd's Illinois team, 9-5, to finish at 7-2 in the standings. They'll face the winner of the tiebreaker game tomorrow morning between Wisconsin's Ryan Lemke and Minnesota's Peter Stolt. Arizona's Fred Maxie rink and North Dakota 2's Duane Symons team also finished 7-2 but Connecticut beat both teams this week. Arizona will be the No. 2 seed and will play No. 3 North Dakota II in the other semifinal. Maxie (Phoenix) and teammates Cindy Kortebein (Knoxville, Tenn.), Richard Maskel (Green Bay, Wis.) and Jan Legacie (Edmore, N.D.) outlasted Alaska's Dennis Thies rink, 6-5, in an extra end tonight while Symons concluded the round robin earlier today and had the bye tonight. Stolt's Minnesota team ousted Jerod Roland's North Dakota I rink, 9-2, after scoring three points in the sixth end and following up with a steal of three to take command. Washington's Brady Clark team got to play spoiler to Wisconsin's Lemke rink as they defeated the Badger State team, 10-3, after just six ends. The semifinals for the event are set for 4 p.m. Friday followed by the gold-medal and bronze-medal games next Saturday afternoon.
