FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 18, 2008 Connecticut sits alone at top at 2008 U.S. Mixed Championship (DETROIT) - Wisconsin's Ryan Lemke rink put a halt to Arizona's win streak Tuesday night at the 2008 U.S. Mixed National Championship at the Detroit Curling Club. Lemke (Medford, Wis.) and teammates Jackie Lemke (Medford, Wis.), Kroy Nernberger (Madison, Wis.) and Becca Wood (Wausau, Wis.) only scored in two ends but it was just enough to knock off Fred Maxie's Arizona team to improve to 3-2. After the first three ends were blanked, Arizona was forced to one point in the fourth end. Wisconsin answered with three but Arizona would tie the game with a single and a steal of one. Another three points by the Badger State team in the eighth end forced Arizona to try to score big in the ninth end. Maxie's rink only scored a deuce and ran out of stones in the 10th end to put an end to their five-game win streak. Minnesota's Peter Stolt team stayed in the thick of the playoff hunt with a seemingly easy 14-5 win over David Loan's Michigan team. With the win, Stolt (Plymouth, Minn.) and teammates Maureen Stolt (Plymouth, Minn.), Tim Jeanetta (Elk River, Minn.) and Margeaux Ackerman (Minneapolis) are now 4-2 with three games remaining in the round robin. For Michigan, however, the playoff door slammed shut tonight. Derek Surka's Connecticut rink took command of first place after defeating North Dakota II, 9-4. Surka (New Haven, Conn.) and teammates Charrissa Lin (New Haven, Conn.), Sean Murray (Edgewood, Md.) and Rachel Sethi (Falls Church, Va.) stole the game's final four ends to hand Duane Symons's team just their second loss. Alaska's Dennis Thies team earned its second straight win with a 9-8 defeat of Doug Boyd's Illinois rink. The round robin continues through Thursday. The semifinals for the event are set for 4 p.m. Friday followed by the gold-medal and bronze-medal games next Saturday afternoon.
