FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 17, 2008 Minnesota hands Connecticut from the top spot at 2008 U.S. Mixed Championship (DETROIT) - Minnesota's Peter Stolt rink handed Connecticut its first loss, 7-6, Monday night to improve to 3-2 at the 2008 U.S. Mixed National Championship at the Detroit Curling Club. Stolt (Plymouth, Minn.) and teammates Maureen Stolt (Plymouth, Minn.), Tim Jeanetta (Elk River, Minn.) and Margeaux Ackerman (Minneapolis) stole two points in the seventh end against Derek Surka's team to go ahead 6-4 and held on as the East Coast team came up short in the 10th end. Last year's semifinalists from Wisconsin improved to 2-2 as Alaska suffered its fourth loss, 9-4. Ryan Lemke's Wisconsin rink took the lead for good in the fifth end against the Dennis Thies team after scoring four points. Alaska could only score singles with the last-rock advantage and Wisconsin piled on another three points in the second half of the match on the way to the victory. Doug Boyd's Illinois team improved to 2-3 after defeating the hometown team skipped by David Loan (Brighton, Mich.), 7-5. Boyd (Chicago) and teammates Susan McDonald (Glenview, Ill.), Chris McTavish (Chicago) and Pamela McTavish (Chicago) battled with Michigan in a back-and-forth match that saw the lead change six times. Michigan scored a single in the first end and stole a point in the second to earn a deuce the hard way. Illinois countered with two and the teams matched those same outputs to have the game tied 4-4 after six ends. Illinois then stole singles in the next two ends to sew up the game. Arizona's Fred Maxie rink won its fourth straight game after holding off North Dakota 1's Jerod Roland team, 11-10, in an extra end. The round robin continues through Thursday. The semifinals for the event are set for 4 p.m. Friday followed by the gold-medal and bronze-medal games next Saturday afternoon.
