CURLING: USA women to play tiebreaker for final playoff spot at 2008 World Seniors

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 14, 2008 USA women to play tiebreaker game for playoff spott at 2008 World Senior Championships (STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - The USA women led by Pamela Oleinik are set to play Switzerland in a tiebreaker game for the final semifinal berth this afternoon at the 2008 World Senior Championships in Vierumaki, Finland. The U.S. finished the round robin with a 6-3 record and tied for second place with Scotland, Finland and Switzerland. Canada finished in the top spot at 7-2 and earned the No. 1 playoff spot for Saturday. They'll face the winner of the tiebreaker game between the U.S. and Switzerland's Renate Nedkoff rink. Scotland and Finland will play in the other semifinal. Based on head-to-head results and the draw shot distance score, the Swiss and American ladies finished behind those two teams. The U.S. beat the Swiss yesterday, 10-9, with a come-from-behind victory. Oleinik (Brookfield, Wis.) and teammates Laurie Rahn (Lake Forest, Ill.), Susan Curtis (Rogers, Ark.) and Jo Ann Matthews (New Berlin, Wis.) defeated Japan's Eriko Igarashi rink, 7-4, this morning to win the team's third straight game. The U.S. trailed 4-2 heading into the second half of the match but scored in the final four ends to ensure the victory and chance to advance to the playoffs. In the men's semifinals, USA's David Russell rink will play Sweden while Canada and Scotland are set to face off.
