CURLING: USA women eliminated from playoff chase at 2008 World Seniors
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 14, 2008 USA women eliminated from playoff hunt at 2008 World Seniors (STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - Switzerland halted the USA ladies quest for the playoffs in the tiebreaker game Friday afternoon at the 2008 World Senior Championships in Vierumaki, Finland. The Swiss ladies, led by Renate Nedkoff, turned away Pamela Oleinik (Brookfield, Wis.) and teammates Laurie Rahn (Lake Forest, Ill.), Susan Curtis (Rogers, Ark.), Jo Ann Matthews (New Berlin, Wis.) and Donna Purkey (Greenwich, Conn.), 6-5, to eliminate the Americans from the playoff hunt. Switzerland will now play Canada in tomorrow's semifinal. Scotland and Finland will battle in the other semifinal. The U.S. women didn't go out quietly though as they tied the game in the final end of regulation to force an extra end. The seasoned Swiss ladies didn't allow the Americans to make a repeat of the round robin match between the two teams when the U.S. stole the final end to win. Instead, the Swiss scored one point for the right to advance to the playoffs. The U.S. women finish the 2008 World Seniors in fifth place with a 6-4 record. The U.S. men, led by David Russell (La Crosse, Wis.) play in the semifinals tomorrow morning against Sweden. Live scoring can be found at http://www.curling.fi/en/competitions/leagues/2687/results.
