March 13, 2008, 1 a.m. (ET)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 13, 2008 USA women inch towards playoffs at 2008 World Senior Championships (STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - The perseverance of Pam Oleinik's Team USA paid off in the last two games to push their record to 5-3 with one game remaining in the round robin at the 2008 World Senior Championships in Vierumaki, Finland. Oleinik (Brookfield, Wis.) and teammates Laurie Rahn (Lake Forest, Ill.), Susan Curtis (Rogers, Ark.) and Jo Ann Matthews (New Berlin, Wis.) came from behind in their last two matches to stay alive in the playoff hunt. The Americans are tied for third place with Sweden, Switzerland and Scotland. Canada and Finland lead the standings at 6-2. In dramatic fashion, the American ladies scored three points in the final end against Switzerland's Renate Nedkoff rink this morning to force an extra end and then ended up stealing a point for the win. In last night's match with Ireland's Fiona Turnbull team, the U.S. fell behind 7-1 but scored five points in the seventh end and two points in the eighth for the win. The U.S. finishes out the round robin tomorrow morning against Japan (3-5). A win would ensure at the very least a tiebreaker game for a semifinal berth. Canada (6-2) plays Sweden (5-3), Switzerland (5-3) takes on Finland (6-2), Scotland (5-3) faces Ireland (4-4) and in a game with no playoff implications, New Zealand (0-8) plays England (1-7). The U.S. men (6-1), led by David Russell, finish the round robin at 7 tonight (local time) against Ireland (5-2). Live scoring can be found at http://curling.fi/en/competitions/leagues/2687. Since the World Senior Championships were created in 2002, the U.S. men have won four silver medals (2006, 2005, 2004, 2003) and one gold medal (2002) while the women have won three bronze (2007, 2004, 2002).
